How I got interested in my major: Geology was not my first choice. I was lost in college and overwhelmed by all the different subjects. I wanted to do it all.
That all changed when I took physical geology. I learned that in geology you apply the biological, chemical, and physical sciences to learn the changes that occur on earth. This was exactly what I was looking for.
The following semester I enrolled into a field study course which increased my interest in geology. I was fascinated to see the different processes and structures that I had learned previously right before my eyes. Throughout the trip, I would be left in awe because I would never have thought that the earth looked different. Geology taught me to not take the earth for granted, that as a whole it is forever changing even if it’s at a small scale.
Why I love geology: I love geology because it helps decipher earth’s past. Wherever you go, there will be history underfoot and that amazes me. Every time I go for a hike, I would find information about the area and try to learn its history. Once there, I would look for exposed sedimentary rock and try to guess at what might have existed in the past. Still, I always find it hard to believe some of the things I have learned and want to continue being amazed by earth’s history.
